Greens pick up swing in Tasmanian election

Tasmania's Greens party has picked up a swing in polling at the state election, holding two seats and nearly securing a third.

State party leader Cassy O'Connor has been retained in the Hobart-based electorate of Clark, as has incumbent Rosalie Woodruff in Franklin.

With about 62 per cent of votes counted on Saturday night, the Greens were showing a positive swing of more than four per cent.

Ms O'Connor declared the "Greens were back in town" during a lengthy speech at the Hobart tally room in which she criticised the major parties.

"Our message to the next premier, whoever that may be: stop trying to destroy the joint," she said.

"Be part of creating a greener, fairer, kinder future."

The Liberal Party won a historic third term in Tasmania but ongoing vote counting will determine if they govern in majority.

The Greens look set to narrowly miss a third seat, in the northern electorate of Bass, in the 25-member lower house.

The Greens presence in Tasmania's parliament has been on the decline in recent elections.

The party held five seats in 2010, when they formed minority government with Labor.

They dropped to three in 2014 and won just two at the last election 2018, Ms O'Connor and Dr Woodruff.

Greens federal senator Nick McKim said the party's improved vote was evidence the Liberal government's decision to call an early election after it fell into minority on the floor of parliament had backfired.

"(It) continues a national trend where the major parties are losing votes because they are taking votes and voters for granted," he told ABC.

"They are saying things to the voters which are, quite frankly, disrespectful."
