Greens of Lisburn £2million revamp planned for one of NI's oldest stores

One of Northern Ireland's oldest grocery stores could get a new restaurant as part of a £2million revamp.

The Lisburn based Greens Food Fare has submitted plans to demolish part of its existing building to redevelop the ground-floor premises into a "high quality and spacious convenience store".

And if successful the upper floors will also be extended and turned into a restaurant and wine bar.

The plans also focus on redeveloping the rear extensions which face onto Smithfield Square to create new car parking spaces.

The store on Bow Street, originally known as JT Green & Sons, was first established in 1923, but there has been evidence of Robert Macartney's grocery store on the site as far back as 1886.

In 1970 the store was taken over by the Black family who expanded it into a neighbouring property.

The business remained in the Black family until 2017 when it was bought over by Kilrea businessman Kenny Bradley who heads the Kenny Group.

He told the Belfast Telegraph: "We're trying to modernise it and create two shop fronts, on Bow Street and onto the Smithfield Square car park."

The business owner added the plans are subject to favourable retail conditions.

He said: "The two biggest problems we have in Lisburn are rates and parking.

"Whilst we're in for planning and we're keen to do the investment, we need to monitor what the council's plan is for Smithfield Square car park and we're very conscious of the 2020 revaluation by Land and Property.

"If we don't see a reduction, then we will be revisiting this project before we go ahead.

"The plan is fantastic and I would love to deliver it into Lisburn, but there are two huge stumbling blocks."
