Queensland Greens MP Amy MacMahon is recovering in hospital after a two-car collision at a busy Brisbane intersection.

Dr MacMahon was treated for head and suspected spinal injuries before being taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a serious condition following the crash.

Dr MacMahon's Toyota Prius was struck by a Hyundai i30 at the intersection of Baines St and Main St in Kangaroo Point about 6.30pm on Monday.

The Greens MP had left a function and was on her way to another community event when the collision occurred.

"Witnesses say that the person who hit Amy ran through a red light at speed," Queensland Greens leader Michael Berkman said.

Dr MacMahon was on Tuesday responsive and resting in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

"It will be a few days before we know the full picture as her healthcare team continues to assess her condition," Mr Berkman said.

"Anyone who knows Amy will know how keen she'll be to get back out there serving more free community dinners and fighting for her community as soon as possible."

Mr Berkman said he was hopeful his 37-year-old colleague would make a full recovery.

"We know that she is getting great care, she's in the best possible place she could be," he said.

"While all the relevant specialists continue to assess her condition, we'll just play it by ear."

Premier Steven Miles and Opposition Leader David Crisafulli have both offered well wishes to Dr MacMahon as she recovers.

"I know our hardworking doctors and nurses will look after her," Mr Miles told parliament on Tuesday.

The other driver, a woman in her 20s, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The Queensland Police forensic crash unit is investigating.
