Greenpeace Rainbow Warrior moors in Edinburgh for 'Just Transition' action day

Environmental activists Greenpeace have moored their iconic Rainbow Warrior vessel in the Firth of Forth as part of a day of action to demand a fair transition to renewable energy.

The third incarnation of the global protest boat arrived in Leith on Thursday evening ahead of Friday’s date on the ‘Just Transition Tour’.

The charity says it wants any move to an environmentally stable economy to avoid leaving workers from polluting industries behind, potentially retraining them to keep green energy powering the world.

Oil and gas workers along with politicians were invited to sign a petition mounted on a 42ft wind turbine blade to access sustainable jobs after the move to green power.

The 190ft yacht, named after the original which was bombed by French intelligence services in 1985, will make stops in several locations across the country during the tour, hosting speeches and films focused around the Just Transition theme.

It has previously moored in Aberdeen, Dundee, Inverness and Sunderland during its journey around the UK.

Mel Evans, head of Greenpeace UK’s oil campaign said: “We stand in solidarity with oil and gas workers, who are being ignored by politicians.

“Offshore workers have powered our economy through some really difficult times and have plenty of transferable skills that will be vital to our transition to renewable energy.”
