Greenock town centre named the most deprived area in Scotland

Greenock town centre has the worst levels of deprivation in Scotland, according to a study of income and health.

The official report shows the wider Inverclyde area has the highest share of deprived areas, with Glasgow following shortly behind.

Cartyne West and Haghill, in Glasgow, was second most deprived area.

Part of Ferguslie Park in Paisley had been the most deprived part of Scotland but is now ranked third.

At the other end of the scale, affluent Stockbridge in Edinburgh is the least deprived area. It knocked leafy Giffnock off the top spot.

The study is produced every four years, broken into nearly 7000 small “datazones”. Findings are based on income, employment, health, education, housing, services and crime.

Deprivation does not always mean residents are “poor”. It can also refer to local opportunities and access to health services.

The Scottish Government uses the information to direct investment in areas such as housing.

Communities Secretary Aileen Campbell said: “Employment remains high in Scotland and the unemployment rate remains low by historical standards. Our investments in employability services, including Fair Start Scotland, is supporting those furthest from our labour market into work.

“We will continue to work in partnership with local government, the third sector and communities themselves to do all we can to tackle the causes of inequality and support the regeneration of our towns and cities.”

The government invested £1.4 billion in 2018-19 to support low-income households, including over £100 million to mitigate the worst impacts of UK Government welfare cuts.

A £20 million Empowering Communities Programme aims to tackle inequalities.
