Greenock flat targeted in gangland firebomb feud was safety checked by police days before being torched

A flat firebombed as part of a deadly drug feud was checked over by police and firefighters two days before it was torched, we can reveal.

The ground floor flat in Kincaid Court, Greenock, went up in flames on Monday night – the fifth fire in two weeks over the seaside town’s drug trade.

Neighbours claim a safety visit was carried out by Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service in the days leading up the firebombing.

But the neighbours in the same tenement block claim they were not told that the ground floor flat could be a target.

One angry resident said: “The fire truck was spotted outside on Saturday, but nobody really thought too much of it. It wasn’t until the attack happened on Tuesday that it sprung to mind.

“We think it was known that our neighbour was a target and, together with firefighters, the police carried out a safety check.

“But they never bothered to tell us our building could be torched by firebugs and that we could be caught up in it all.

“The fire alarm system either failed or was switched off – it didn’t act. Anyone of us could have died, it’s absolutely shocking.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service in partnership with Police Scotland has carried out a number of preventative fire safety checks at premises assessed to be potentially at risk.

"It would be inappropriate to provide any further information on this.”

We reported yesterday on an Instagram threat to firebomb more homes in Greenock over a £2000 debt – believed to be drug related.
