A man has been charged with attempted murder and fire-raising after a block of flats in Greenock was targeted with a petrol bomb.

We told how residents at Kincaid Court in the Inverclyde town were evacuated after a ground floor flat was targeted on September 28.

Emergency services raced to the scene at around 10pm after reports of a blaze, which police confirmed was being treated as deliberate.

In another incident, a 24-year-old man was charged in connection with an attempted murder at a property on Union Street on September 14 in the town.

Officers confirmed that a 25-year-old man has been arrested and charged on Wednesday, following the incident.

He is expected to appear at Greenock Sheriff Court on Thursday.

Police hailed the 'significant development' in their investigation but assured locals that while investigations are ongoing, there is an increased police presence in the area.

"Detective Superintendent Gerry McBride said: “This is the fourth arrest and charge in connection with our investigation into recent fire-raisings in the area.

“This is another significant development into these incidents, which I know have caused distress and concern within the community of Inverclyde and I would like to reassure the public that investigations remain ongoing and an increased police presence is still in the area.

“I would continue to urge anyone with information to please contact police on 101, our dedicated email address  OperationTell@scotland.pnn.police.uk  or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
