Well, the 2026 movie schedule will get off to a killer start, as Gerard Butler’s Greenland 2: Migration has been given a January 9, 2026, release date. Butler, who is pretty much the king of the January box office with hits like the Den of Thieves franchise and Plane, will share the date with Jason Statham’s Mutiny, People We Meet on Vacation, and SOULM8TE, for now.
Greenland 2: Migration Will Follow The Garrity Family As They Exit The Fortified Bunker To Start A New Life In Europe
In the final moments of the Greenland ending, we watched as the Garrity family (played by Gerard Butler, Morena Baccarin, and Roger Dale Floyd) and other survivors exited the bunker to discover a world brought to the brink of destruction by fragments of the planet-killing comet.
While major cities around the world were wiped off the map, there was still some hope for humanity, as heard in the various radio messages from other secure locations. Lionsgate has announced that Greenland 2: Migration will follow the Garrity family as they leave the relative safety of the bunker to start a new life in France, where scientists believe they can still find breathable air and soil capable of fostering life. However, this isn’t going to be a walk in the park.
Gerard Butler And Morena Baccarin Lead The Greenland 2: Migration Cast
The Greenland 2: Migration cast will once again be led by the two leads from the first film, Lionsgate has announced. The upcoming sequel to the 2020 disaster flick will see Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin reprising their roles as John and Allison Garrity, respectively. But Roger Dale Floyd won’t be rejoining them as the Garrity’s son, Nathan, as Jojo Rabbit and Silent Night (another great disaster film) star Roman Griffin Davis has come in as his replacement.
The studio has also announced that Amber Rose Revah, Sophie Tompson, Trond Fausa Aurvag, and William Abadie will be appearing.
The Greenland 2: Migration Trailer Teases Radiation Storms And More Meteors
After what seems like years of radio silence, the world finally got a proper look at the upcoming movie when the Greenland 2: Migration trailer dropped in September 2025. Clocking in at a little less than two-and-a-half minutes, this action-packed and emotionally gripping preview picks up years after the events of the first film, and introduces a world on the brink of destruction.
With radiation storms (yes, your eyes aren’t failing you), even more meteors left over from the devastating asteroid that nearly destroyed the planet in the first film, and a struggle for survival on the surface of a scorched Earth, there’s a lot going on here. Director Ric Roman Waugh And Screenwriter Chris Sparling Returned For Greenland 2: Migration
Also returning are director Ric Roman Waugh and screenwriter Chris Sparling (who co-wrote with Mitchell Lafortune), the core creative team behind the surprise 2020 disaster movie hit, according to Variety. In a statement shared with the outlet back in 2021, Waugh touched on the impact of the first film when looking toward the franchise’s future:
Greenland spoke to our humanity in the middle of a global catastrophic event, highlighting what people are capable of doing to one another, both good and bad, when it’s life or death.
This will be the third film project to see a collaboration between Waugh and Butler, a partnership that started after working together on back-to-back pictures, Angel Has Fallen and Greenland, which came out in 2019 and 2020, respectively. The director-actor duo has also been attached to be a part of Night Has Fallen, but there hasn’t been much movement since the project was given the green light in November 2020.
What Is The Greenland 2: Migration Rating?
If you were hoping the movie would be suitable for pretty much anyone over the age of 9 years old, you’re in luck, because the new film is rated PG-13, per FilmRatings.com. However, this doesn’t mean the upcoming disaster film won’t be without some intense or violent moments, as the rating has been handed down due to strong violence, bloody images, and action.
How To Watch The First Greenland Movie Before Migration Comes Out
Considering that more than five years will have passed by the time Migration comes out, there’s a good chance you’re going to want to watch Greenland sooner or later. A lot has gone on in the five years since the movie’s initial release, and a nice refresher never hurt anyone (especially with a movie as captivating as this). That being said, now is the perfect time to revisit the end-of-the-world disaster film before the sequel comes out, as it is currently streaming for anyone with an HBO Max subscription.
