Jan. 13--The Greenhouse Theater Center will produce an inaugural 7-month series featuring solo performers as part of the theater's new producing division, owners Wendy and William Spatz announced Wednesday.
"Solo Celebration!" will run June 2016 to Jan. 2017 with as many as 15 full-length plays, along with limited engagements of cabaret performances and comedy events. All performances, to be produced by Greenhouse Theater Center or co-produced with a theater company, will take place on one of the 4 stages in the venue.
The series will be programmed through submissions curated by the venue's new artistic director Jacob Harvey. Harvey comes to Chicago from Berkeley Repertory Theatre, where he was awarded the Bret C. Harte Director/Producer Fellowship and the New York Musical Theatre Festival, where he was associate producer and interim director of programming.
All programmed performances will receive production, marketing and administrative support from the Spatz family.
The festival, though produced by the Greenhouse Theater Center, is not a part of SoloChicago Theatre Company, which produced Ronald Keaton's "Churchill" at the Greenhouse. "Churchill" went on to play an extended run off-Broadway at the Shubert's New World Stages.
The Greenhouse Theater Center was formerly the home of Victory Gardens Theater and Body Politic Theatre.
Submissions to be a part of the festival are being accepted through March 1 at greenhousetheater.org
