'Green' winter travel zones listed for Irish tourists including Spain, France, Italy and more

Spain, France, Italy and Poland have been noted by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control as some of the safest countries to travel to this winter.

Each has been reporting extremely low infection rates over the last few weeks - with under 50 cases of infection per 100,000 of the population.

The latest ECDC report highlighted a number of regions in each country as ‘green’, meaning they have had a test positivity rate of less than 4% in the last two weeks.

Passengers are no longer discouraged from travelling to or from the areas mentioned by the report - as the chance of being infected is relatively low.

They are:

  • Regions of Italy: Apulia, Molise, Abruzzo, Umbria, Sardinia, Piedmont, Liguria, Lombardy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia
  • Regions of France: Bretagne, Normandie, Hauts-de-France, Grand Est, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Centre-Val de Loire, Nouvelle-Aquitaine
  • Regions of Spain: Galicia, Asturias, Castille and Leon, Extremadura, Andalusia, La Rioja, Navarre, Murcia, Valencia
  • Regions of Poland: Pomerania, Kuyavia-Pomerania, Greater Poland, Lubusz, Lower Silesia, Opole Silesia, Lesser Poland, Subcarpathi, Holy Cross Province, Lodz

European officials are still urging all tourists heading to any of these regions to check the travel advice available for each.

For instance, across Italy, the EU Digital Covid-19 Certificate is mandatory for all citizens and travellers who want to be granted entry to the country, as well as to bars, cafes, restaurants, theatres, museums, sports events, amusement parks, conferences, and meetings, and more.

Similarly, anyone travelling to France should be aware that they need a valid EU Digital Covid Certificate that proves that they have been vaccinated, revently recovered, or have tested negative during the last 48 hours in order to be given access to most places and services.
