Green Party's Ciaran Cuffe becomes second MEP to be elected and first in Dublin

Green warrior Ciaran Cuffe was the second person elected to the European parliament in Ireland on Monday night.

He passed the quota of 72,790 on the 13th count in the RDS.

A jubilant Mr Cuffe spoke to reporters immediately after his victory.

“This is a great day for the Green Party and Ireland, but also its a Green wave that’s sweeping Europe and this weekend shows that young people want to see change.

“They have spoken to their parents and grandparents and I think the people have voted for an alternative to business as usual.”

Mr Cuffe was riding the crest of a Green wave that saw the party quadruple its base at local government level from its previous tally of 12 councillor.

Its share of the vote is now close to 10% and the party can look forward to a general election where they are looking to add TDs to their two they presently hold.

Green leader, Eamon Ryan, told the Irish Mirror his target is to win at least six seats in the next Dáil.

“Six is a number with which you can really make a difference in the Dáil.

“That’s achievable and I think this weekend’s performance provides us with the platform to reach that.”

Mr Cuffe also won a seat on Dublin City Council, but he won’t need to take that now having won the bigger prize of a seat in Brussels.

The Greens can co-opt another member of their party to take his place on the council.

The party performed well in the other two Euro constituencies as well, but look like falling just short in Midlands North West where the fresh-faced Saoirse McHugh was running for public office for the first ever time.

Veteran campaigner and party senator Grace O’Sullivan was still in with a fighting chance of winning a seat in Ireland South last night.

Fine Gael TD and former Tánaiste, Frances Fitzgerald, was next in line for a seat in Dublin last night as she inched towards reaching the quota and she passed it on the 14th count just before 10pm.

Her party colleague Seán Kelly topped the poll in Ireland South and is heading back to the European parliament for another term.
