Green Party councillors demand meeting with Dublin City Council regarding controversial Ashton Dog Pound

Green Party councillors have demanded a meeting with Dublin City Council regarding the controversial Ashton Dog Pound.

The pound is under investigation by Gardai after a number of dogs were allegedly improperly administered a lethal drug by untrained staff members.

Two dogs, a Bichon Frise and an Akita, were allegedly given Dolethal, a controlled drug normally only used by trained vets, on Friday.

The Bichon Frise suffered a suspected overdose and was found dead the next day while it is alleged the Akita was left to suffer horribly for days until it was taken into the care of Gardai.

It is suspected that other dogs at the pound have died in a similar manner.

The Pound is used by three of Dublin's local authorities - Dublin City Council, South Dublin County Council, and Fingal County Council.

The Green Party councillors posted their letter today, addressed to Council Chief Executive Owen Keegan, asking that Dublin City Council "be prepared to review their contract" with Ashton and "seek alternative services".

"Any service provider contracted by Dublin City Council should have dog's welfare as central and should be seeking firstly to reunite lost dogs with their human, or rehabilitating and seeking to re-home dogs, and that dogs should not be routinely killed," the letter continued.

Donaghmede Cllr Dearbhail Butler described the situation at the pound as "extremely worrying", while Ballymun-Finglas Cllr Caroline Conroy said they will "will also seek to have a visit of the Pound ASAP".
