Green Party councillor Hazel Chu elected as Lord Mayor of Dublin

Green Party Councillor Hazel Chu has been elected as Lord Mayor of Dublin.

Selected the 252nd Lord Mayor, Ms Chu will take over from Fianna Fail’s Tom Brabazon.

Cllr Chu is the ninth woman and first from immigrant parents to hold the position.

She said: “I plan to be an Ambassador for the city, locally and nationally, and to help shine a light on the increased diversity and different perspectives Dublin has to offer.

“As the ninth woman to be voted in as Lord Mayor, I want to encourage more women to put themselves forward for politics and positions of leadership so that we can build a stronger, more reflective society which benefits us all.”

Cllr Chu, who is the Chairperson of the Green Party, was born and raised in Dublin with parents from Hong Kong and studied Politics and History in UCD before going on to train as a barrister at Kings Inns.

In 2019, she ran as a Green Party Local Election candidate for the Pembroke Ward and topped the poll.

She currently still holds the title of largest percentage of first preference vote in a local election for a first-time candidate.
