Green MSP for Central Scotland Region reflects on 'difficult year' in Christmas message

2021 has been a particularly difficult year for many.

The continuing pandemic and the rising cost of living means that pressures that started in 2020 have continued in 2021.

Personally, it has been quite an extraordinary time to be elected as the first Scottish Greens MSP for the Central Scotland region and it has provided many steep learning curves and many very emotional moments.

Following two family bereavements in late 2020 and early 2021 it was difficult to be fully immersed in the elation of being elected. Despite that, it is one of the highlights of my year.

I am so grateful to for the opportunity to represent my constituents at Holyrood.

As I’m sure everyone would expect the pandemic has dominated much of our work and I’m sure it will continue to do so for some time to come. That said, we have still made significant progress in many areas.

Personally, I was pleased that in June the Parliament backed my amendment calling for the establishment of safe consumption rooms and after summer recess I announced my intention to consult on a Member’s Bill that will establish buffer zones around abortion clinics.

Outside of Parliament it has been a pleasure to work with constituents and community groups across the region on issues such as planning, safe spaces for children to play, transport, housing and lots more.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been in touch with us so far and I look forward to being able to see some of you face to face next year.

Christmas is again not going to be quite normal this year. Please make sure that you and your family keep safe and well and that you test yourselves before going to see anyone. If you are eligible for any of your Covid vaccines make sure you get them.

This can make a huge difference if you catch Covid.

I know that we are all fed up of restrictions and testing but following them shows care for each other and a sense of collective responsibility to keep us all safe.

Continuing to do this could be one of the best gifts you give this year.

I hope that for all of you who have found this year hard, who have kept going and need this family time or those who just need a break will find what you need this Christmas.

Whether that is peace and calmness or a loud and busy Christmas Day, have a fantastic Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Gillian Mackay MSP for Central Scotland Region.
