Green list of holiday travel countries released in full by UK Government

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has revealed the traffic light system that will allow us to go on holiday to some countries this summer.

Countries on the green list will mean that people can travel from England, and when they return they will not need to quarantine.

Portugal, Gibraltar and Israel are among 12 countries and territories people in England can visit from May 17 without self-isolating on their return, the Department for Transport said.

The green list also consists of Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Brunei, Iceland and the Faroe Islands and the Falklands.

This is in addition to the remote territories of the Falklands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Saint Helena, Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha.

France, Spain and Greece are not yet included but the list will be updated every three weeks.

Turkey, Maldives and Nepal will be added to the red list.

Mr Shapps said the 'stay in the UK' restrictions would be removed from May 17.

Mr Shapps said the removal of international travel restrictions on May 17 was “necessarily cautious”, adding: “We must make sure the countries we reconnect with are safe.”

May 17 is the earliest that overseas leisure travel will be allowed for people in England under Boris Johnson’s road map for easing restrictions.

Mr Shapps said we had made huge progress in controlling Covid this year. He said: "We're not at the end of it but the signs are very hopeful."

He said: "The only route out of this pandemic is careful and prudent."

The Prime Minister said on Wednesday there will be “some opening up” on that date.

The devolved administrations have not set dates for the restart of foreign holidays.

People entering England from an amber country must quarantine at home for at least five days, and take a minimum of two post-arrival tests.

Any country not on the green or red list is on the amber list.

Those returning from a red list country must stay in a quarantine hotel for 11 nights at a cost of £1,750.

Assessments will be based on a range of factors, including the proportion of a country’s population that has been vaccinated, rates of infection, emerging new variants, and the country’s access to reliable scientific data and genomic sequencing.

Destinations are likely to require holidaymakers to show evidence they have received a coronavirus vaccine or taken a recent negative test.

Grant Shapps has confirmed that people in England will be able to display their status using the NHS app, but there are doubts over whether it will be ready for May 17.
