'Green list' countries: Foreign Office travel advice update sparks hope for 2021 holiday destinations

Government officials appear to have indicated which countries could appear on the 'green list' for travel, when international holidays are allowed to return.

The UK Foreign Office advice has been updated to confirm there is no advice against travel to a list of destinations because of coronavirus.

As it stands, international travel remains illegal, with the earliest date for its return earmarked as Monday, May 17, on the Government's roadmap out of lockdown.

But this week, the Foreign Office (FCDO) has updated its advice on travel, stating: "The FCDO is not advising against travel to the islands of Rhodes, Kos, Zakynthos, Corfu and Crete.”

Other countries believed to be getting the green light are Lanzarote, Tenerife, the Canary Islands, and Gran Canaria, and there are no warnings in place against Malta, Iceland, Gibraltar or Israel.

The latest advice is believed to indicate some of the destinations that could appear on the so-called 'green list' when it is made public.

Foreign Office travel advice has changed for the following countries:

  • Barbados
  • Cuba
  • Gibraltar

  • Greek Islands - Rhodes, Kos, Zakynthos, Corfu and Crete.
  • Iceland
  • Israel
  • Mainland Portugal and Madeira
  • Malta
  • Spain Canary Islands - Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura
  • USA, except for the Northern Mariana Islands and the US Virgin Islands

Meanwhile, blanket warnings remain in place for Italy, France and Croatia, as mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, including Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza also remain restricted.
