A former Birmingham office block used by high street bank HSBC is to be turned into a hotel and student accommodation after city planners gave the scheme the green light.
The unit at 12 Calthorpe Road, in Edgbaston, was designed by legendary city architect John Madin and opened in 1962 but will now undergo a renovation programme.
Birmingham-based developer Mercia Real Estate is leading the project to create a new 123-bedroom Voco hotel and 226 student bedrooms.
The project will involve partial demolition of the L-shaped building along with internal and external alterations and an extension.
The hotel will be located within the smaller, five-storey section and the student accommodation in the taller, 11-storey part.
The site will also include a restaurant and bar, a virtual training room, multimedia lounge, games area, cinema room and study rooms.
The application was passed by seven votes to two with one abstention at the latest meeting of Birmingham City Council's planning committee.
Mercia Real Estate is also involved in the renovation of another of John Madin's buildings in Edgbaston.
Last summer, it purchased Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce's offices in nearby Harborne Road for £4.75 million.
The sale and leaseback has enabled the chamber to stay in the buildings as a tenant while Mercia Real Estate has plans to add extra floors on the site to create new office accommodation.
