Green light for more than 700 apartments in Birmingham

Plans for a major new housing development near Birmingham city centre have been approved.

The proposals by Homes England will see 762 apartments built on land in New Bond Street, Bordesley.

The project was given the green light at the latest meeting of Birmingham City Council's planning committee but one councillor said the scheme was "another cluster of boxes".

The scheme will see a collection of five buildings of up to 15 storeys each developed, with work set to be completed by 2027.

Alongside the residential accommodation, there will also be more than 20,000 sq ft of commercial space fronting Grand Union Canal.

The application site is currently occupied by offices and a self-storage facility.

Planning committee member Cllr Gareth Moore said that he hoped work would be done on the designs to make them more aesthetically pleasing, given the prominent location of the development.

"There wasn't a lot of conversation on it but my comments were mainly on the indicative design for the scheme and complaining that it just looked like another cluster of boxes," he said.

"It is an outline application so they don't have to bring forward a detailed design at this stage but there were some indicative designs of what it could look like and I wasn't particularly keen on them.

"My criticisms is that we need to make sure that whatever comes forward is of a good, high-quality design, given its prominent location on the ring-road. But that will be considered as part of the reserved matters stage."

A spokesperson for Homes England said: "Our New Bond Street scheme will transform this canalside setting into an exciting community.

"We're currently inviting developers to bid for the scheme and, as part of their proposals, they need to meet certain design quality standards, such as Building for a Healthy Life, which is a design tool for creating places that are better for people and nature.

"The current artist's impression is only one example of what the scheme could look like."
