Works to redevelop the bus layover adjoining The Station are expected to begin early next year after the Joint Regional Planning Panel approved Hunter and Central Coast Development Corporation's plans for the site.
The $6.7 million landscaping project will convert the bus depot into a public space integrated into the former railway station's platforms.
It also includes landscaping on part of the old heavy rail corridor, completing the Market Street Lawn from Queens Wharf to The Station.
That section will include two sets of granite insets mimicking the rail tracks which once ran to the station.
The depot landscaping includes "light and mist installations", raised plant beds with feature trees and ground planting, bluestone and granite paving, seating and "heritage and indigenous interpretative elements".
The Station features shops in its heritage-listed buildings while the precinct is used for markets and events. The state government is set to decide on an "end use" for the entire site next year.
