Green light for £3m plan to turn Crosby into 'destination attraction'

A £3m plan aimed at turning Crosby into a " destination attraction " has been approved by Sefton Council.

The local authority yesterday granted planning permission to remodel and extend Crosby Lakeside Adventure Centre (CLAC), with space for more beds, a new conference and events space, and a roof terrace.

Imagineering Global, who prepared the plans on behalf of the council, say “the centre should be developed as a coastal gateway by creating a destination attraction and vibrant community hub.”

It is the latest in a series of ambitious schemes from the council, which last week revealed plans to build a huge new state-of-the-art theatre and conference space in Southport.

They will now aim to make CLAC more profitable - as it has incurred losses in recent years.

Currently, the building offers leisure facilities on the ground floor and hotel rooms on the first floor. And the new plans will see an additional 38-beds across eight rooms within a ‘bunk barn’.

The bunk barn will be designed to accommodate school children, club members, or businesses visiting for team-building exercises.

Under the plans, a 2,200 sq ft conference and events space will also be built, as well as an entrance lobby to provide access to the newly refurbished bar and restaurant.

There will also be an extension to the restaurant in the form of a glazed terrace.

Imagineering Global said: "In the current challenging economic climate Sefton Council is looking to maximise revenue streams from all its assets including the Crosby Lakeside Adventure Centre which currently incurs significant annual losses.

"The Council is looking to explore the potential opportunities offered by a re-invigorated asset and maximise the potential for income generation from the delivery of quality services."

Seafront Residents’ Action Group sent Sefton Council a letter of support for the plans, welcoming the "additional income for the council".

The letter also asked for noise and hours of usage to be regulated.
