Green light for 11-storey flat block on 'unsightly' land near Leeds city centre

A 11 storey block of flats will be built just outside of Leeds city centre , after planning chiefs gave the plans the go-ahead.

The building, which will comprise 217 individual apartments , will be located off Regent Street and Skinner Lane in Sheepscar.

Councillors took just 10 minutes to decide the plans should go ahead at a meeting on Thursday afternoon.

There had been two objections against the scheme, but council officers felt it would make good use of brownfield land.

In a report that went before the city plans panel, they said: “This application proposal is a significant opportunity that would contribute to the continuing regeneration of the Mabgate/Regent Street area, and is a high quality sustainable development which would bring with it a number of new residential dwellings, and as such contribute towards housing delivery.

“The scheme would provide a range of dwelling types and sizes, and provide jobs during both construction and following completion.

“The proposal is compliant in terms of both accessibility and sustainability.

“The proposed redevelopment would also enhance the character of the surrounding area, by regenerating a prominently-located unsightly and underutilised brownfield site that has detracted from a principal route into the City Centre for almost a decade and currently does not make the best use of urban land.”

The block will be made up of 160 one-bed flats , with 49 two bed and eight three bed properties and will include underground parking.
