Ibiza, Majorca and the other Balearic Islands could be removed from the UK Government’s green list following a surge in Covid-19 cases.

The Balearics have seen an influx of British holidaymakers since last Wednesday after being added to the UK government’s green list.

Initially it gave hope to holidaymakers who no longer have to quarantine on their return home to the UK.

However, the Balearic Islands could go back to the amber list when the travel list is updated later this month which would mean travellers would have to self-isolate on their return.

On Sunday, health officials recorded 303 cases in the previous 24 hours - 70 more than the 233 reported the previous day.

Covid positive tests have also increased from 6.76 per cent on Saturday to almost 8.5 per cent on Sunday, according to The Mirror.

Intensive care hospitalisations with Covid infections has reached 14 - ten in Majorca, one in Menorca and three in Ibiza.

Spain has seen a surge in coronavirus cases, notably among young people, despite the success of the vaccination programme, according to The Guardian.

On Wednesday, Spain’s health minister Carolina Darias said the vaccine programme remained “the most powerful weapon we have”.

She added: “We’re at a stage of the pandemic when we’re getting closer and closer to the end, but we can’t let our guard down.

“We have to follow the rules.”

It wouldn’t be the first time a country was pulled from the green list causing chaos.

Portugal was previously booted from Britain’s green list in June.

It resulted in mayhem for UK travellers who had to reschedule or pay for new flights home.
