Green Councillor set to become new lord Mayor of Dublin

Green Party Councillor for Ballymun-Finglas Caroline Conroy is set to become the 354th Lord Mayor of Dublin if an agreement between parties holds.

Councillors are scheduled to vote in the next Lord Mayor at their annual meeting on Monday. The Green Party, Fianna Fail, Labour and the Social Democrats are in a voting pact called the Dublin Agreement which allows them to collectively decide who becomes Lord Mayor.

If the agreement holds up, Cllr Conroy will be the eleventh woman to hold the office and the third consecutive female Lord Mayor. The job pays a salary of €66,656 as well as expenses and accommodation in the Mansion House if they chose to live there.

The Green Party decided who would get their allocated tenures as Lord Mayor after the 2019 local elections. The other was Cllr Hazel Chu who served in the 2020-2021 term.

Fianna Fail and the Greens get two runs at the office of Lord Mayor while Labour get one under the terms of the agreement. There are Councillors who say the voting pact detracts from the election because the votes are not necessarily based on merit.

Caroline Conroy failed to get elected in the 2014 local elections before succeeding to win a seat five years later. Ms Conroy also ran in the 2016 and 2020 general elections for Dublin North West but failed on both occasions.

Cllr Conroy said she was waiting for Monday's vote to speak publicly about the role and her plans for it. However, her bio on the Green Party's website suggests she wants Dublin City Council to be more independent.

It reads: "I stand for your interests, not vested interests and I'm working to ensure our communities get a real say in the decisions that are being made for us. It’s time for Dublin to take its own decisions about its future, and I’ll work to make sure that your voice gets heard."
