Green candidate apologises for sharing 'harmful' social media posts about Jewish people

A Green Party candidate standing in the upcoming local elections in Lambeth has apologised after sharing social media posts which said Donald Trump is “owned by Jews” and spreading misinformation about the 9/11 terror attacks.

Saiqa Ali, who is a Lambeth Green Party candidate for Streatham St Leonard’s ward, apologised “for any offence or distress caused to anyone by my social media posts”, adding that it was not her intention.

Ms Ali has been accused by the Lambeth Labour group of sharing anti-Semitic posts that “repeat harmful tropes about Jewish people”, including “offensive” comments made about the Holocaust.

Ms Ali apologised last Friday, saying: “I unequivocally reject anti-Semitism in all its forms.

“My comments were rooted in concern for the humanitarian situation in the Middle East, and I remain committed to speaking with care, responsibility and respect for everyone.”

Ms Ali’s social media posts were first reported by The Spectator last week. On August 26, 2025, Ms Ali allegedly posted: “England has a government overrepresented with Zionists Jews” and said Prime Minister Keir Starmer is a “Jewish Zionist”.

Apost from July 21, 2024 appears to show a snake with the Israeli flag printed on its skin as it wraps itself around the world. Ms Ali captioned the post, “It’s time to cut the head of this snake. #FreePalestine”.

Another post showed an AI-generated image of a stereotypical Jewish person with the caption: “Don’t you know the rules? We went through the Holocaust, and now we get to kill everyone, forever!!”

Ms Ali’s Instagram account was reportedly set to private following The Spectator article. A Facebook post from January 4 of this year which suggested 9/11 was a “false flag attack on US soil” is also no longer available to view.

In response, a Green Party spokesperson said: “This does not represent the views of the Green Party; we are looking into it.”

Cllr Donna Harris, the Leader of Lambeth Lib Dems has contacted the Leader of the Greens, Zack Polanski and Cllr Scott Ainslie, Leader of Lambeth Greens, stating Ms Ali’s alleged posts “raise significant concerns not only for your party but for public confidence in local democracy”.

In a letter addressed to Mr Polanski and Cllr Ainslie, Cllr Harris said: “Residents in Streatham and across Lambeth will rightly ask how such views were not identified prior to selection, and whether they are more widely shared in your party.

“This raises broader questions about the robustness of candidate vetting, including whether comprehensive social media checks are consistently undertaken and enforced.”

She added: “At a time when we are seeing a rise in extremism and populism, both in the UK and internationally, it is incumbent on all political parties to ensure that those seeking public office meet the highest standards.

“We have a shared responsibility to bring communities together, not risk importing the kind of division and hostility seen elsewhere.”

In a separate letter to Mr Polanski and Cllr Ainslie, the Lambeth Labour Group called for the removal of Ms Ali’s candidacy.

The letter noted: “What is equally troubling is the Green Party’s response. You have taken no action.

“This leaves our communities justifiably thinking you either condone her views or don’t care enough to do anything about it save protect her and yourselves from further public scrutiny.”

Sabine Mairey, another Lambeth Green Party candidate for Clapham Town, has been accused of sharing a social media post on Facebook which said “Ramming a synagogue isn’t anti-Semitism. It’s revenge.”. The post, which was an Instagram link shared on to Facebook on March 14, 2026, is no longer visible on her account.

Cllr Claire Holland, Leader of Lambeth Labour Group, wrote to Mr Polanski and Cllr Ainslie on Monday, again calling for the removal of Ms Ali’s candidacy as well as the removal of Ms Mairey.

Cllr Holland said: “These individuals are not fit to represent Lambeth residents. Their hate-filled views are spreading anxiety and fear amongst our communities.

“Your failure to condemn and point blank refusal to take action calls into question your ability as a party to claim to be able to represent diverse communities such as in Lambeth.”

She added: “Their conduct and your subsequent refusal to condemn their actions and take action are deeply alarming for members of Lambeth’s Jewish community, and all those who stand against anti-Semitism and hatred.

“This emerging pattern of behaviour by Lambeth Green Party candidates and your ongoing refusal to take action is extremely troubling.”

A Green Party spokesperson referred to their previous statement and said they are looking into the matter.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) has approached Ms Mairey for comment.

The Lambeth Green Party declined to comment.
