Green Book wins Best Film at Producers Guild Awards making it Oscars 2019 frontrunner

The Producers Guild Awards, one of the best indicators of which way the Academy will swing come Oscars night, has announced its winners.

Seeing off competition from A Star is Born and Roma was Green Book, the new release starring Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen that also won Best Film - Comedy or Musical at the Golden Glove earlier this month

Green Book has faced controversy in recent months with Ali forced to apologise to the family of the man he portrays, African-American jazz pianist Don Shirley Jr, for not seeking their approval when making the film.

Weeks ago, the film's co-writer Nick Vallelonga, the real-life son of Mortensen's character, apologised when an anti-Muslim tweet resurfaced, and director Peter Farrelly acknowledged past allegations of flashing his genitals at colleagues as a joke.

Over its 29 years, the PGA Awards have correctly predicted who will eventualy win the Best Picture Oscar on 21 occasions, including when 12 Years a Slave and Gravity tied in 2013 (the former went on to win the Oscar).

However, it failed to predict the winner twice in the past three years, with the top honour going to The Big Short in 2015 and La La Land in 2016.

This year's Oscars nominations will be announced on Tuesday 22 January.
