Tougher restrictions could be introduced on some popular Greek islands as Covid cases rise.
The upmarket party resorts of Mykonos and Ios were “one step away from strict measures” a government minister warned - only days after some curbs were eased.
Both islands are currently designated ‘orange’ under Greece’s Covid-19 risk-assessment system, but rates of infection are being monitored by health officials.
There is also concern about Covid rates in six more islands – Zakynthos, Tinos, Lefkada, Santorini, Paros and Rhodes.
Deputy minister Nikos Hardalias said: “We urge local authorities and visitors to pay close attention to personal protection measures and operation rules, especially in areas of high congestion.
“The situation still calls for caution. The epidemiological data clearly show the virus is still among us. It is essential we continue to adhere to health measures and protocols.”
Greece currently operates a four-colour warning system which features green, yellow, orange and red.
The new orange rules include increased testing, more vaccinations and tracking. The red level four category includes a midnight-to-6am curfew, a ban on music and all events, and restrictions on restaurants and bars.
More holiday destinations on the mainland have been moved into the orange category and some islands are now poised to follow as the peak holiday season approaches.
