Greek islands battered by 'rare Mediterranean cyclone'

Parts of Greece are being being battered by a rare 'medicane'.

The Mediterranean cyclone, named Ianos, is causing hurricane-force winds with the possibility of flooding in the western coastal area.

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service issued an extraordinary weather and gale warning ahead of the storms landing on Thursday afternoon.

The cyclone has already battered the Ionian islands of Zakynthos (Zante), Kefalonia and Ithaca, and is predicted to hit Ilia and Messinia in the Peloponnese peninsula before moving on to southern Greece.

The extreme weather is expected to calm by Saturday noon.

People on the ground have reported landslides, loss of power, trees down and some houses collapsed as the 'medicane' takes hold.

Videos posted on Twitter also shows the extreme weather conditions in full force.

Deputy Civil Protection Minister Nikos Hardalias warned residents earlier this week that they should limit their movements to only what is necessary.
