Greek holiday island Crete rocked by massive earthquake

A massive earthquake has hit the popular holiday island of Crete this morning.

The magnitude 6.4 tremor was recorded on the Greek island at a depth of around 34 miles (56km).

Residents in the capital Athens are believed to have felt the shocks which were described as "deep" and "felt in many many parts of the country".

Crete is a popular destination for Scottish holidaymakers who look for warmer climates throughout the course of the year.

Properties, including universities and schools, have reportedly been evacuated.

The exact extent of the impact is not yet clear.

In the summer, the island was hit by a 5.2 magnitude tremor and it was felt as far as Turkey and Italy .

Greece lies in one of the most seismically active parts of the world.

The quake comes just one day after tremors in nearby Albania and Bosnia yesterday.

At least 23 people died after the magnitude 6.4 quake struck 19 miles northwest of the capital, Tirana.
