European clubs express interest in West Ham midfielder Carlos Sanchez

West Ham are trying to shift Colombian midfielder Carlos Sanchez before the transfer deadline on Friday and interest has emerged from clubs in in Europe.

The 33-year-old is out of contract this summer and has struggled with both serious injury and a lack of form during his 18 month stay in the capital so far.

Sanchez has made just six Premier League appearances so far this season having missed nine months of the last campaign with a knee ligament injury suffered in the Carabao Cup rout over Macclesfield last September.

A couple of Spanish clubs were initially interested in Sanchez but they would have had to have sold players to make room for him in their squads, which they are struggling to do, so it appears a move to Spain is unlikely.

But football.london understands that there is still other options for the Colombia international, though the player would need convincing to leave with just six months of his contract remaining.

Sanchez is earning around £65,000 a week at West Ham and goes down as one of the biggest flops of the Manuel Pellegrini and Mario Husillos era at the club, not all his own fault having suffered serious injury, but he's not looked up to scratch in limited game time when he has been fit.

West Ham may well struggle to find a team to take on Sanchez's big wages for the rest of the season but they are hoping that a loan deal or permanent move can be sorted before January 31.

Elsewhere at the club, Jack Wilshere is set to undergo a hernia operation on Wednesday, reportedly in Qatar, as the midfelder suffers yet another injury setback.

There is no timescale on his return but manager Moyes said on Tuesday he hoped it wouldn't rule Wilshere out for too long. The Arsenal midfielder has battled with two ankle injuries and a groin problem since moving to the Hammers on a free transfer from Arsenal in the summer of 2018.
