Dentistry provides a show that you can really get your teeth into in this clever little offering from music-theatre company, The Clod Ensemble. When a humbly born young Edwardian woman is thrown over by the evil Lord Coining, she thinks she will starve to death. Fortunately she meets a lowly dentist and the poor but happy couple set up in love and business together.
Then one fateful day Lord Coining's toothfloss to landmines conglomerate, Megadent Inc, sets up its "one stop shop for enviable smiles" across the road and the young couple's business becomes a cavity of capitalism. Can they fight back and capitalise on a looming war in which millions of young men will "lay down their lives in defence of God, civilisation and precious mineral resources"?
This is one of those small but perfectly formed shows in which the content has found entirely the right form. The whole thing is presented like an early silent movie complete with intertitles and live piano accompaniment. Coming complete with a highly polished veneer, it is fun, witty, cynical and sharply performed. And while it makes you laugh it also makes some neat little points about global capitalism, and reminds you that wealth does not promise happiness.
A morality tale that proves money can't buy happiness, the capitalism dream crumbles - and so do teeth.
