Greece to lift block on UK visitors next week - but foreign holidays still banned

Greece is set to left quarantine regulations for UK visitors from next week ahead of a full reopening of its borders from May 14.

Government officials have suggested that quarantine restrictions for arrivals from the UK, EU and the USA will be banished within days.

Passengers will not be quarantined, as long as they prove that they have received two doses of a Covid-19 vaccine or show a negative PCR test carried out 72 hours prior to their arrival, the official said, adding the tourists would be subject to domestic lockdown restrictions.

However, the earliest date that foreign holidays could be permitted for people in England under Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s road map for easing restrictions is May 17.

Nine designated airports will be used for arrivals, including Athens, Kos, Thessaloniki, Heraklion and Chania (Crete), Rhodes, Kos, Mykonos, Corfu and Santorini. Two land borders will also be in operation.

“We will gradually lift the restrictions at the beginning of next week ahead of the opening on May 14,” a senior tourism ministry official said.

Greece hopes that it will be included on the UK Government 'safe' green list of destinations when it is revealed in May.

An ambitious vaccination programme codenamed ‘Freedom’ has been launched to ensure islands are Covid-free, shielding vulnerable residents from outside visitors and restoring foreign confidence.

The government has vowed at least 69 islands will be vaccinated by the end of April.
