Greece to ban Brits when it reopens to tourists

There is more bad news for holidaymakers who are still holding out hope for a getaway sometime soon.

Greece is set to ban British travellers when it reopens to tourists in a matter of weeks.

The Greek government has cited the country's poor coronavirus record as a reason as it selects the 29 countries where it will accept tourists from when international flights resume on June 15.

Greek tourism minister Haris Theoharis told ITV News that the UK's record on coronavirus is currently not good enough for those living in the country to make their way over to Greece.

He said: "I think that the UK has a big difference in terms of the current medical status of the country with Greece, so I don’t think it's likely it will be there."

The countries from which people will be accepted from are; Albania, Australia, Austria, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, Estonia, Japan, Israel, China, Croatia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lebanon, Lithuania, Malta, Montenegro, New Zealand, Norway, South Korea, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic and Finland.

Tourists from the list of countries will be randomly tested at the airports.

Greece's government said that the list will be expanded on on July 1 and coronavirus data will continued to be monitored.

It comes just after Ryanair announced its plan to its intention to restart 40% of its normal flight schedule from July - including flights to Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece and Cyprus.

Brits are also banned from visiting Cyprus with transport minister Yiannis Karousos announcing that only direct flights from 19 countries will be allowed to the country.

This will happen in two stages starting on June 9 with hotels opening from June 1.

But this is unlikely to affect Brits right now as the UK's quarantine measures come into force next week.

From June 8, any international traveller coming in to the country will face checks at airports and have to remain in quarantine for 14 days.
