Greece to allow British holidaymakers from next month

Greece has suggested that British holidaymakers could visit the country by June 1.

Beginning next Monday, workers will be allowed to travel to Greece, as lockdown rules are relaxed.

Following this measure, if Greece's coronavirus cases remain low, there will be no restrictions on travel from June 1, reports the Express.

However, Brits would still have to quarantine for two weeks following the latest government announcement.

According to the paper, Greece's Tourism Minister, Harry Theoharis said in April the country will introduce precautions for travel.

He said: “Of course, we will take precautions in terms of the requirements before travelling.

"But also in the way that we travel.

"Social distancing rules will apply but we want to continue showing the kind of hospitality we're known for."

And speaking to German paper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Mr Theoharis said: “This is a comprehensive plan that includes all possible measures: on beaches, in swimming pools or at places where breakfast is served, when transported by bus etc.”

He added: “We want a plan that will guarantee safety but will also be realistic.

“This combination is important so that everyone is able to feel good and relax.”

Despite Greece's hopes, health secretary Matt Hancock has warned that people are unlikely to be able to go on foreign holidays this summer.

Asked whether "summer was cancelled", Mr Hancock told ITV's This Morning: "I think that's likely to be the case."

He added: "It is unlikely that big, lavish international holidays are going to be possible for this summer.

"I just think that's a reality of life."

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has advised against all but essential international travel since March 17, while domestic holidays are not allowed due to the Government's lockdown orders issued six days later.
