Greece storms: Six killed including boy, 2, after gales batter tourist region

At least six people, including children aged eight and two, have died after extreme weather battered a popular tourist region in Greece.

Dozens of others were injured after gale-force winds, rain and hailstorms struck northern Greece late on Wednesday, authorities said.

Two elderly Czech nationals were killed when strong winds swept away their travel trailer in Halkidiki, a tourist peninsula in northern Greece, police said.

Elsewhere in the region, a woman and an eight-year-old boy, both Romanian nationals, were killed after a roof collapsed on a restaurant in Nea Plagia.

A 39-year-old man and a boy, aged two, also died after a tree fell on their vehicle, according to the Greek Reporter.

A medical centre said it had treated 60 to 70 people, most with fractures.

The Sun reports that at least 100 people were injured in the extreme weather last night.

"It is the first time in my 25-year career that I have lived through something like this," the medical centre director, Athansios Kaltsas, told OPEN TV.

"It was so abrupt, and so sudden."

Meteorologist Klearxos Marousakis described the weather conditions as "extremely unusual" for this time of year.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in force in Halkidiki, where the weather has been described as 'unprecedented' by local media.

Greece has also experienced sweltering heat recently, with the Acropolis in Athens closing last week as temperatures soared above 35C.
