Greece on verge of second lockdown after tourists cause coronavirus spike

Greece is on the verge of a second lockdown after tourists caused a spike in coronavirus infections.

More than 100 holidaymakers have tested positive for the deadly virus since the country reopened its borders.

It is now feared that strict lockdown restrictions could be reinforced after the recent surge in cases.

Inspections of bars and restaurants are to be ramped up, with health officials becoming concerned over the number of 'asymptomatic' cases among foreign travellers.

Greek authorities announced tougher border checks and are considering reintroducing travel restrictions in a bid to combat the spread of the virus.

Local authorities have said safety guidance for coronavirus is being frequently ignored, prompting government spokesperson Stelios Petsas to vow they were "determined to protect the majority from the frivolous few."

The country and its islands reopened its borders to tourists on July 1.

British holidaymakers can now visit Greece with first flights scheduled to arrive today, July 15.

It comes as Brits have been urged to wear face masks while travelling, in hotels and on beaches.

Tourists should even have face coverings on by the pool where they cannot keep a two-metre gap between their fellow sunbathers.
