Greece is leading the charge back to beaches of the Mediterranean as hopes rise that holidays in southern Europe will be possible this summer.

Operators said they have seen levels of bookings to Greece reach the highest levels since last August after the country’s tourism minister Haris Theoharis said he was in “technical talks” with the British Government about allowing travel from May for people who have had a vaccine or a recent negative Covid test.

Noel Josephides, chairman of Sunvil, said islands such as Corfu, where infection rates have been consistently low, were proving particularly popular.

Spain, the most popular foreign destination for British tourists, has also opened talks with British officials .

Industry body ABTA said bookings for other traditional hotspot destinations remain low but they hoped for an upturn once plans for a European vaccination passport were clearer later this month.

European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen yesterday revealed plans for a digital green pass to kick-start travel.
