Greece fires: Firefighters battle blaze raging across southern coast

Firefighters are working desperately to put out a huge forest fire near a seaside town in southern Greece.

Residents and holidaymakers have been evacuated from several seaside areas as the blaze continues to rage outside the city of Corinth in the eastern Peloponnese, firefighters said.

The fire has no "active front" at the moment and is under control, but around 250 firefighters, four planes and four helicopters continue to pour water on the blaze with fears it could pick up again later amid windy weather.

Reinforcements came in from northern regions on Wednesday evening to help control the flames. The chief of Greece's fire brigade also travelled to the scene to coordinate efforts.

Most evacuees from the area, popular for holidaymakers and retirees, were taken by bus to nearby beaches. No injuries were reported.

Around ten homes were gutted or seriously damaged in the fire, local officials said. Farmland, pine and olive trees were also burned in the flames.
