Greece earthquake: Strong 6.2 tremor hits off coast of tourist hotspots Kos and Rhodes

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake has struck close to tourist hotspots in Greece.

The quake struck in the Mediterranean Sea shortly before 4pm GMT.

It hit at a depth of 10km about 60 miles to the east of Crete and 50 miles south of Rhodes.

The earthquake appears to be one of several which struck the region this afternoon.

A 5.6 magnitude tremor was felt in Akhisar in the west of Turkey.

This morning a slightly weaker earthquake hit in the same place.

Greece is one of the European countries most prone to earthquakes.

Back in 2017 a 6.6 magnitude tremor struck in Kos, injuring 150 people in Greece and a further 370 in Turkey.

Two people were killed.

Last week a 5.0 magnitude earthquake hit close to Sami in the Cephalonia region.
