Greece could welcome holidaymakers from UK next month as country eases travel restrictions

British holidaymakers could be able to visit Greece from the start of next month.

Workers will be allowed to enter from next Monday as the country's lockdown rules are relaxed.

If the number of new coronavirus cases remain low, travel restrictions will be lifted for other visitors from June 1, the Liverpool Echo reports.

However, any Britons jetting to the country will have to go into quarantine for two weeks according to a government order.

According to the Express, Greece's tourism minister, Harry Theoharis said in April the country will introduce precautions for travel.

He said: “Of course, we will take precautions in terms of the requirements before travelling. But also in the way that we travel.

"Social distancing rules will apply but we want to continue showing the kind of hospitality we're known for."

Speaking to German paper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Mr Theoharis said: “This is a comprehensive plan that includes all possible measures: on beaches, in swimming pools or at places where breakfast is served, when transported by bus etc.

“We want a plan that will guarantee safety but will also be realistic. This combination is important so that everyone is able to feel good and relax.”

However, UK health secretary Matt Hancock has warned that people are unlikely to be able to go on foreign holidays this summer.

Asked whether "summer was cancelled", Mr Hancock told ITV's This Morning: "I think that's likely to be the case."

He added: "It is unlikely that big, lavish international holidays are going to be possible for this summer.

"I just think that's a reality of life."

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has advised against all but essential international travel since March 17, while domestic holidays are not allowed due to the Government's lockdown orders issued six days later.
