VISAKHAPATNAM: The elected council of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation completed its first year in the office on Friday. The swearing-in-ceremony of the 98 corporators of Vizag city, including the election of mayor and deputy mayor, was conducted on March 18, 2021.
The civic body conducted a sports meet for the elected representatives of the council to mark the first anniversary. The four-day event concluded at the Swarna Bharathi indoor stadium on Friday.
The GVMC has sanctioned 5 lakh special development works for each corporator of the city to mark their one year in the office. Prizes were distributed to the winners in the sports meet in the evening.
Meanwhile, Jana Sena GVMC corporator P Murthy Yadav alleged that four corporators are acting as shadow mayors. “These people are the reason behind the non-payment of 80 crore rental and tax dues from various shops, functional halls, etc. Every street of the city is riddled with damaged roads and potholes. Moreover, the council agreed to raise 160 crore by mortgaging the 31-acre land for the ongoing underground drainage project in Pendurthi, Gajuwaka and Malkapuram. Even though the GVMC has allocated special development works for the first anniversary, they have not been completed in even one ward. The GVMC employees and officials are threatening the public in the name of property tax and garbage taxes,” alleged Murthy Yadav.
