Greater Manchester town named one of the happiest in the UK

Altrincham has been revealed as one of the happiest places in Britain in 2019, according to new research.

The leafy Trafford suburb has been ranked the sixth most content place in the UK in Rightmove’s 2019 Happy at Home Index.

The property hotspot with it's bustling market, close-knit community, convenient location and high-performing schools have all helped earn Altrincham a top spot in the list.

More than 22,000 people from 194 places across Great Britain participated in the survey, with residents revealing how happy they are where they live.

The annual poll asks residents how happy they are where they live, based on 12 happiness factors, across 194 areas in Great Britain.

These indicators range from how safe residents feel and how friendly the neighbours are, to how good the local services and facilities are, the level of community spirit and the quality of cultural activities in the area.

Respondents were also asked about their local amenities, including medical services, shops and restaurants, schools and recreational facilities.

The North dominated the top ten spots in the new index, with Altrincham joined by the likes of Hexham, Harrogate, Skipton and Southport, all of which were ranked as the happiest places.

However on a broader scale, the study found the South West to be the happiest region in the UK,  followed by the South East and the East.

The Northumberland market town of Hexham took the crown for the happiest place to live, followed by Harrogate in Yorkshire.

Third place was Richmond-upon-Thames in London, the happiest place to live in the capital for five consecutive years according to the study.

On a local scale, Altrincham was the only Greater Manchester town to rank in the happiest 100 places in Britain - from the list of 194.
