Greater Manchester set for intense thunderstorms as Met Office issue 36-hour weather warning

Thunderstorms could bring an abrupt end to the country's heatwave later this week.

Greater Manchester has been enjoying spells of uninterrupted sunshine and hot weather for the last couple of weeks.

But that could soon be replaced by thunderstorms and heavy rain, the Met Office has warned.

The pleasant weather should stay in place for a little longer, but by Wednesday, thunderstorms could pass through our region.

The Met Office have issued a yellow thunderstorm warning for Greater Manchester, parts of Yorkshire, and other areas of the UK.

The current warning is in place from 6pm on Wednesday (16 June) and 6am on Friday (18 June).

The warning means that areas affected are likely to see storms, with a potential for flooding and travel disruption in some areas.

The weather service warned that there is a "small chance" homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail and strong winds.

It also said that where flooding or lightning strikes occur, this could have an adverse impact on public transport - and could cause delays or cancellations to train and bus services.

There could also be difficulty driving as sprays and sudden flooding could impact road conditions and see some road closures.

They also said there is a small chance some communities could be cut off by flooded roads.

And there is a “slight chance” power cuts could occur and other services could be lost.
