Greater Manchester's response to Neil Warnock's reserve team threat is inspired

Greater Manchester council has taken Neil Warnock at his word.

The controversial Cardiff boss, sickened by a linesman's blunder which cost his relegation-threatened side an invaluable victory over Chelsea on Sunday, threatened to play his reserve team at Manchester City on Wednesday night.

"I might play the reserves down there, it’ll be interesting to see what the journalists think of that," he said in the wake of a 2-1 defeat prompted by an 84th minute offside equaliser by Cesar Azpilicueta.

Cardiff boss Neil Warnock threatens to 'play the reserves' against Man City after Liverpool go top

"We keep getting knock-backs, I will probably play the U23s on Wednesday against Manchester City and try to keep it down to 10 or 11. It doesn't matter who you play at the minute, it is who has a flag in his hand and who has a whistle."

Warnock has not clarified whether he was being serious or not, but Greater Manchester Council clearly believed him.

In a traffic sign displayed on Monday morning the council warned drivers of potential delays on Wednesday evening because of a match between Manchester City v Cardiff U23s.

It remains to be seen exactly how strong Cardiff's line up will be at the Etihad against Liverpool's title rivals.
