Greater Manchester's first San Francisco-inspired 'parklet' opens - with artwork, cycle parking and table tennis

Greater Manchester's first San Francisco-inspired 'parklet' has been unveiled by walking and cycling tsar Chris Boardman.

Installed in Stockport town centre's Bridgefield Street - next to the Redrock leisure complex - it marks another milestone in the former Olympian's transformative Bee Network project.

The mini-park boasts on-street features including cycle-parking, seating and greenery.

And there is also a new 'pocket park' in and underused part of the street, complete with plants, an art wall, and a concrete table tennis table - as well as chimes for children to play with.

The Bee Network masterplan aims to revolutionise how people move around the conurbation, and puts people - not cars - at the heart of its vision.

Currently there are 42 schemes signed off, including a new walking and cycling route between Victoria and Piccadilly stations, and a traffic-free scheme between Salford and Trafford Park.

A key part of this, parklets and pocket parks are intended to create inviting spaces that provide a place for people to stop, rest, socialise - and park up a bike.

They can also be customised to include features ranging from open-air and covered bike parking, to bike-hire stations and even basic maintenance tools.

Mr Boardman, said he hoped there would soon be many more around Greater Manchester for people to enjoy.

"For the last 60 years, our towns and cities have been designed around cars, not people." he said.

"This parklet and pocket park, and many others that we hope to roll out across Greater Manchester will help people to reclaim the streets, spending more time enjoying them and making journeys on foot and by bike more pleasant and attractive.

"Parklets and pocket parks are not only a relaxing space, they are also extremely practical. Twelve bikes fit into the same space as one car parking space. The added bonus is that they offer something for people of all ages."

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham - said the parklet and pocket offered a mouth-watering 'taster' of how the city region's streets could look like in the 'very near future'.

He said: "It's exciting to get this glimpse, seeing them installed on the street today. I'd encourage as many people as possible to get down to Stockport town centre over the next few months to take a look."

The Bridgefield Street site will be monitored for a period of three months to see the effect it has on the street.

People can now visit the online Bee Network map to pinpoint where they would like to see a parklet or pocket park installed.
