Greater Manchester's coronavirus death toll has risen again today

Thirty more people have died in Greater Manchester's hospitals after testing positive for coronavirus.

New NHS England data shows that the COVID-19 death toll has risen to 1,082 in our region.

The biggest rise in deaths was recorded at Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS trust where 11 more patients died.

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust recorded another six COVID-19 deaths, Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust four, Stepping Hill two, Salford Royal two and a further two at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust.

Another patient died at Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust, a mental healthcare provider.

The UK's chief medical officer said yesterday that social distancing measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus could remain in place for the rest of the year.

Professor Chris Whitty said 'disruptive social measures' would have to go on until a vaccine, or 'highly effective drugs', could be found, which he warned was unlikely to happen in 2020.

On April 23, the total figures for coronavirus related deaths at Greater Manchester hospitals stand at:

  • Bolton NHS Foundation Trust - 138
  • Greater Mancheser Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust - 6
  • Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust - 222
  • Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust - 282
  • Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust - 2
  • Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust -124
  • Stockport NHS Foundation Trust - 91
  • Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust - 93
  • The Christie NHS Foundation Trust - 6
  • Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust - 117

Some of the larger trusts run several hospitals in Greater Manchester.

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust oversees the Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI), Wythenshawe Hospital and Trafford General, while Pennine Acute is in charge of North Manchester General Hospital, Fairfield Hospital, the Royal Oldham Hospital and Rochdale Infirmary.
