Greater Manchester's coronavirus death toll has risen again

Greater Manchester's  coronavirus  death toll has risen again.

NHS chiefs say 35 more lives have been claimed by the virus in the region.

The latest data released on Friday (April 24) shows at least 1,117 people have died in our hospitals having testing positive for COVID-19.

The biggest rise in deaths was recorded at Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, where another 11 patients died.

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust reported a further nine coronavirus deaths, Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust seven and Stockport NHS Foundation Trust three.

Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, Salford Royal and Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust all reported one further death.

Another patient died at both the Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust and the Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust - they are mental healthcare providers.

The total number of deaths caused by coronavirus is likely to be much higher.

Deaths 'in the community' - including care homes and people's own homes - are not recorded in these figures and are published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) several days later.

On Tuesday (April 21), the ONS said more than 1,00 people had died in care homes nationally having contracted the virus.

Coronavirus deaths at Greater Manchester hospitals, as of April 24:

  • Bolton NHS Foundation Trust - 139
  • Greater Mancheser Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust -  7
  • Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust - 231
  • Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust -  293
  • Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust -  3
  • Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust - 125
  • Stockport NHS Foundation Trust - 94
  • Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust -  94
  • The Christie NHS Foundation Trust -  6
  • Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust - 124

Some of the larger trusts run several hospitals in Greater Manchester.

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust oversees the Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI), Wythenshawe Hospital and Trafford General, while Pennine Acute is in charge of North Manchester General Hospital, Fairfield Hospital, the Royal Oldham Hospital and Rochdale Infirmary.
