Greater Manchester passes tragic milestone of 5,000 coronavirus hospital deaths

More than 5,000 people have now died in Greater Manchester's hospitals after testing positive for coronavirus.

The tragic milestone was passed on Sunday as another 27 deaths were recorded.

It means the region's hospital death toll is now 5,006.

The 5,000th death in Greater Manchester was recorded 329 days after the first - when a man in his 60s died at North Manchester General Hospital on March 8, 2020.

Today (Sunday) another 15 deaths were reported at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

Five more people died at Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, while three more fatalities took place at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust.

Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust each recorded a further two deaths.

The total number of coronavirus deaths at hospital trusts in Greater Manchester, as of Sunday, January 31, are:

  • Bolton NHS Foundation Trust - 548
  • Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust - 9
  • Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust - 949 (+15)
  • NHS Nightingale Hospital North West - 6
  • Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust - 1,383 (+5)
  • Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust - 7
  • Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust - 430 (+2)
  • Stockport NHS Foundation Trust - 442 (+3)
  • Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust - 512 (+2)
  • The Christie NHS Foundation Trust - 22
  • Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust - 698

Across England a further 563 people who tested positive for coronavirus have died in hospital.

It brings the total number of confirmed deaths reported in hospitals to 71,789, NHS England said on Sunday.

Patients were aged between 24 and 99.

All except 29, aged between 34 and 97, had known underlying health conditions.
