Greater Manchester hit with heavy rainfall as Met Office issue weather warning

A yellow weather warning has been put in place for Greater Manchester with more heavy rain on its way.

The wet weather is likely to lead to some travel disruption and possible flooding, the Met Office has warned.

Following last week's torrential downpour from Storm Christoph thousands of homes had to be evacuated due to rising water levels.

Many of the region's rivers reached 'dangerously high levels', the Environment Agency said, with the River Mersey coming 'very close' to breaching its bank.

Heavy rainfall is forecast for today until midnight tonight (Thursday).

Flood alerts are in place on the Middle River Mersey catchment including areas near Bramhall, Stockport, Sale, Altrincham and Urmston.

They are also in place in the River Bollin catchment areas included Knutsford, Wilmslow, Macclesfield and Bollington.

The Met Office has said that flooding may also be possible in the Upper River Irwell catchment with Oldham, Rochdale, Bolton, Haslingden, Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall.

The yellow weather warning says that 'flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely' and that 'bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer'.

Spray and flooding on roads will probably making journey times longer, say forecasters.

The Met Office website states: "Further rain moves into all areas during the evening, falling heavily at times and being confined to northern areas by the early hours. Showers will cross southern counties before dawn. Minimum temperature 2 °C."
