Greater Manchester council employs two 'coronavirus officers'

Two new COVID-19 officers have been employed by Trafford council.

The two officers will be on hand to help businesses to reopen as lockdown begins to ease and provide advice and information on government guidelines.

While they don’t have any enforcement powers, they can and will report breaches of social distancing or other issues to the council and police who will then deal with any interventions needed.

The officers will work alongside other council services provide advice and support directly to businesses in Altrincham, Sale, Stretford, Urmston and Partington in particular.

Funded by the European Regional Development Fund, through the government’s Reopening High Streets Safely initiative, the officers will help to ensure social distancing measures are being maintained.

They will work closely with businesses to give them with up to date information so they can meet government guidelines to keep their staff and customers safe.

Coun James Wright, Trafford council’s executive member for housing, said: “Trafford council has helped to support all our local shops and businesses to open safely following the easing of lockdown. We are proud of the work we have carried out and delighted that the re-openings are gathering momentum.

“The information officers will continue this good work by being out there on the ground and ensuring our retail and hospitality businesses continue to receive the support they need to open and trade safely. They will be of tremendous support to our pubs, bars, shops and restaurants.”
