Greater Manchester Conservative MP speaks out against tougher lockdown restrictions

A Greater Manchester Conservative MP says he is fighting against the introduction of 'heavier restrictions' to tackle coronavirus.

Bolton North East representative Mark Logan says he does not want to see his town 'unfairly punished' by a 'one-size-fits-all' approach to lockdown.

It comes ahead of a major announcement from Boris Johnson expected later today. It is believed that the Prime Minister will outline plans for a three-tier system of rules which could put further pressure on areas with high Covid-19 infection rates.

In Bolton, pubs, bars and restaurants have only just been allowed to reopen last week and there is a fear that these hospitality businesses could be forced to close again later today.

In a post on Facebook, Mr Logan said: "My stance on this is very clear; if greater restrictions are introduced in the region, Bolton should not be unfairly punished. We've done well in stymieing the virus in the last few weeks.

"Currently, Manchester has double the number of Covid-19 cases in Bolton. A one-size-fits-all approach would not be appropriate and I will continue to fight for our businesses and livelihoods here in Bolton."

In an accompanying video, he added: "I've been out and about in Bolton town centre today and people are feeling really good, especially since restrictions on bars and restaurants have been lifted as of last week.

"However, like you I've also heard rumours about having heavier restrictions put in place in different parts of the North of England next week.

"I've been fighting against that at Westminster and I will continue to speak up for you."

Infection rates in Bolton rose rapidly in early September and the town had the highest rate in the country for some time.

However, that number has now fallen and the latest figures show the borough had 288 cases for every 100,000 people - the third lowest in Greater Manchester.
